President (1)

The president functions as the primary liaison between the members of the band and the director. The president is also responsible for coordinating weekly officer meetings where the director and officers discuss band issues. These meetings also serve as an open forum for discussion for all band members.

The president works closely with the director and consults other officers to make scheduling decisions for the band, which the president is responsible for communicating to all band members. The president works with the director to spearhead recruitment initiatives, including a summer mailing, followed by on-campus events early in the fall semester. Along with the Vice Presidents, the president helps to plan social activities for the band.

The president should strive to act as a visionary for the band, and actively try to address problems, complaints or suggestions raised by both band members and fans. To do this, the president should make herself available and accessible to the community, maintaining open lines of communication. The president should also strive to set a good example as a responsible and dedicated band member.

The president acts as a voting officer at all officer meetings and at the Tournament Travel Bid Selection Meeting. The president is also in charge of coordinating and finalizing the rosters and room assignments for all travel bands, and communicating those rosters to both band members and to the director.

The president must have a passion for emailing, and should be prepared to deal with lots and lots and lots and lots of different opinions. And fun...ridiculous fun.

Vice President - Responsibility (1)

A majority of this VP's responsibility is to serve as an assistant social chair to the VP Vice. This includes creating a fun social environment for the band and helping with all DUMB social events. The VP helps new members feel welcome and coordinates social events throughout the year, including: the fall and spring BBQs; Legends of DUMB; Tent 71; other parties or events that the VPs choose to spearhead or that are decided upon by the officers (ex: Band Buddies, The Gong Show, DUMB semi-formal, etc).

The VP Responsibility also heads-up alumni relations by being in touch with alumni about homecoming events such as Legends of DUMB, and keeping alumni abreast of new policies that regard playing with the band. The VP Responsibility also runs officer meetings when the President cannot be in attendance. Furthermore, if the President is in need of additional assistance, the VP Responsibility will be expected to split his/her time between helping the President and acting as an assistant social chair. The VP should also strive to set a good example as a responsible and dedicated band member. The VP Responsibility is invested with full voting rights and will attend the Bid Selection Meeting.

Vice President - Vice (1)

The President of Vice is the band's social chair. She/he is responsible for the planning of D.U.M.B. social activities. These activities should appeal to all members of DUMB and include, but not be limited to, beginning and end- of-the-year softball games, band parties (including the Homecoming "Legends of D.U.M.B." party), Tent 71, semi-formal, etc. The VP Vice collects money to fund social activities that are not covered by the band's discretionary funds budget, a crucial part of the VP role because most "after hours" social activities cannot be subsidized by the Athletic Department budget.

The VP Vice also works very closely as a co-recruitment chair with the President. The VP plays a large part in recruitment by heading up recruitment activities on East Campus in the early fall, targeting freshman musicians over the summer, and participating in D.U.M.B. recruitment during Blue Devil Days. The VP is, in large part, responsible for boosting the morale of the band and increasing the cohesiveness of the group. The VP-Vice is assisted by the VP-Responsibility. The VP should also strive to set a good example as a responsible and dedicated band member. The VP Vice is invested with full voting rights and will attend the Bid Selection Meeting.

Treasurer (Usually 2)

The treasurers are responsible for creating a yearly operating budget to be submitted for the approval of the officers. This includes ordering and distributing D.U.M.B t-shirts, caps, and rugbies (this is very important). Funds available for management by the treasures are those collected and/or raised by the band, but treasurers are in no way connected to the general band budget provided by the athletic department. The funds raised outside of dues will be deposited into a savings account to be used for the purchase of long-term durable goods at the discretion of the band, and the treasurer will continuously maintain that account. Also, the treasurers are responsible for collecting dues and making any payments for clothing and/or other D.U.M.B. debts. And finally, the treasurers are responsible for organizing the annual parent's weekend brunch, and will help in the organization of DUMB's biannual softball games. The Treasurers should also strive to set a good example as a responsible and dedicated band member. The Treasurers are invested with full voting rights and will attend the Bid Selection Meeting.

Secretaries (Usually 2)

The secretaries take attendance of entire band at all events. Consequently, they must be early or on time for all events. Usually, the band is split equally between the two secretaries, each secretary being responsible for the maintenance of attendance data for half of the band. For absences and tardies, note those to be excused via previous email to both you and the band director. For tardies, note time by 15 minute intervals from RTP. Also check for Uniform Dress compliance - which factors into attendance. Also, the attendance data must be entered on the DUMB website. Always allow one week for band members to review and correct their attendance on line before cementing any data. Finally, if attendance for any member becomes noticeably dismal, inform other officers.

The secretaries also attend all officer and full band meetings and take minutes. It is their responsibility to post the minutes on line at lists.duke.edu. If at meetings there are requests for new policies, or revisions to standing policies, the secretaries draft formal copies of these revisions to present for voting at the next meeting. Secretaries also will attend the travel bid decision meeting with copies of attendance records for the band. These records should be broken into section, and than ranked by total points. The total points are a sum of the attendance, seniority, officer, and audition scores. The names and the officer points should then be hidden from the spreadsheet, although the secretaries should have access to the names for the end of the meeting.

The Secretaries should also strive to set a good example as a responsible and dedicated band member. The Secretaries are invested with full voting rights and will attend the Bid Selection Meeting.

Section Wars Commander-in-Chief (Usually 2)

The Section Wars Commander in Chief is responsible for planning and implementing the Section Wars program. SWCICs must plan section wars events and oversee challenges. They are responsible for emailing section leaders to get their approval for all full-band events. They are also responsible for creating the challenge form and making them available to the band. Finally, they must organize and plan the Grand Prize (ex. dinner with the Women's Basketball team).

Equipment Managers (paid) (2 or 3)

Equipment managers are responsible for moving, managing, and generally manhandling the equipment side of D.U.M.B. They are responsible for renting and driving the U-Haul every Friday before a home game, and returning it by that Sunday. Equipment managers must be available on Fridays to load the truck, and on Sunday to unload the instruments at Biddle. Equipment managers will be paid ONLY upon the completion of the last event (usually during basketball season, the Alumni Reunion parade, and storing equipment back in Biddle). Lastly, and very importantly, they should be ABLE and WILLING to actually carry instruments and work until the job is done without procrastination or socialization or doing other tasks.

Uniform Manager (paid) (Usually 2)

Uniform Managers are responsible for inventory, distribution and collection of our marching uniforms. They are in charge of keeping an orderly process by which uniforms are distributed and collected in the uniform storage facility under Card Gym. Uniform managers will be paid only after all uniforms are in and a written report of what is missing and who owes money is turned in.

Librarians (paid) (2 or 3)

This position requires quite a bit of time and a positive attitude towards hours of stuffing folios. You must be dedicated to doing this job, for the entire band's performance is dependent upon having music. Duties include, copying and cutting music for the entire band, ensuring the basketball/football folios are in order, and replacing music periodically throughout the year. The librarians are responsible for checking the stands for leftover folios after games and being responsible for the folio cases when traveling on band trips. Librarians will be paid only upon submission of a list of band members that have not returned folios during football and basketball seasons. Note: due to the early start of football season next year, this position will require commitment over the summer months.

Drum Majors (at Director's Discretion)

Drum majors are chosen from the active membership of the band. Tryouts are held during basketball season (women's games). Each candidate is given a reasonable amount of time to direct the band on the field/stands and conduct one fight song. The band membership provides feedback on the tryouts and the Director makes decisions based on the needs of the band. The fundamental job of the Drum Major is to oversee the musical and performance aspects of the band. Drum majors are responsible for working together and with the Director to make sure they are ready to lead the band. They are in charge of running rehearsal along with the director during marching season and oversee all on-field performances. They must know the music and be able to start all tunes at the proper tempo. As all drum majors will be elevated above the band, they must also be able to recognize mistakes in drill, and point out these mistakes to section leaders who are on the field helping with drill. Finally, at full-band Section Wars events, the Drum Majors are responsible for assigning points to the section that performed the best. Additionally, the drum majors are jointly responsible for bringing water to all football rehearsals as well as breakfast (donuts and bagels) on Saturday mornings.

The Drum Majors are invested with full voting rights and will attend the Bid Selection Meeting.
